Course Description:

The course is designed to provide teachers with a comprehensive understanding of resilience and equip them with practical strategies to help build and foster resilience in their students. Resilience is crucial for students to navigate challenges, overcome adversity, and thrive academically and personally. Teachers will learn about the developmental factors contributing to resilience and explore various practices in the field. They will gain insights into the role of protective factors, developmental assets, empowerment, and strengths-based approaches in promoting resilience. The course will delve into practical strategies teachers can implement in the classroom to support student resilience. Teachers will learn how to promote a growth mindset, create a supportive classroom environment, teach coping strategies and emotional regulation, foster a sense of belonging and purpose, and encourage reflection and self-regulation.

Course Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the concept of resilience and its significance in student well-being and academic success.
  • Explore the developmental factors that contribute to resilience in students.
  • Identify the protective factors, developmental assets, and strengths-based approaches that promote resilience.
  • Gain practical strategies to promote a growth mindset and encourage students to set realistic goals and challenge themselves academically.
  • Learn how to create a supportive classroom environment fostering positive relationships, teamwork, and student empathy.
  • Acquire techniques for teaching coping strategies and emotional regulation to help students manage stress and regulate their emotions.
  • Understand the importance of fostering a sense of belonging and purpose in students and explore strategies to achieve it.
  • Incorporate reflection and self-regulation exercises to help students assess their progress, identify areas for improvement, and set goals.

Course Learning Outcomes:

  • Increased Awareness – Teachers will better understand resilience and its importance in student well-being and academic success.
  • Knowledge of Resilience Factors – Teachers will learn about the developmental factors that contribute to student resilience.
  • Evidence-Based Strategies – Teachers will learn research-based strategies and best practices for building resilience in students, including promoting a growth mindset, fostering a supportive classroom environment, teaching coping strategies and emotional regulation, cultivating a sense of belonging and purpose, and encouraging reflection and self-regulation.
  • Implementation Skills – Teachers will learn about practical skills to implement resilience-building strategies in their classrooms, such as setting realistic goals, providing constructive feedback, fostering positive relationships, incorporating mindfulness exercises, promoting teamwork and empathy, and facilitating self-reflection activities.

Resources & Assessment:

  • The course provides a range of resources to support learners and facilitate the application of acquired knowledge.
  • The course features ungraded, in-course quiz questions designed to assess comprehension of the material. Learners will have the flexibility to attempt these questions multiple times until they arrive at the correct answer. Although the review quizzes are optional, it is strongly advised that participants aim to identify the correct answers to confirm their grasp of the course content.
  • The course incorporates a comprehensive final assessment, known as the ‘Course Test’, designed to evaluate participants’ understanding of the essential concepts covered throughout the course. Upon successfully passing this test, participants will be awarded a course certificate.
